Teaching

An enthusiastic educator, Shannon maintains a virtual private voice studio, with a wide range of ages and experience levels. Lessons are individualized to students’ needs & goals, focusing on vocal technique, language & diction, musical style, music theory & ear-training, and dramatic interpretation. She also helps students develop practice techniques, care for their vocal health, prepare their materials, and foster good mental habits for performing.

Whether in classical music, musical theatre, or jazz, lessons are a safe space for students to learn about their instruments, release from perfectionism, and explore the possibilities for comfortable, confident, and expressive singing.

Shannon's students have competed and placed as Miss America contestants, in NATS competitions, the BroadwayWorld’s ‘Next On Stage’ High School Competition, as well as district & state-level Thespian festivals, solo & ensemble festivals, choral festivals, school and community theatre productions, and acceptance into magnet high school and college music programs.

Students are welcome for long-term mentorship, or short-term support of their performance projects.

In addition to Shannon's operatic training, and 10+ years as a private teacher, Shannon is an experienced masterclass teacherchoral conductor, and classroom teacher. A long-time church musician in a variety of traditions, she was an intern with the First Baptist Church of Tallahassee during her undergraduate studies, where she lead and conducted adult and children's choirs. Shannon is a confident classroom teacher for choral and instrumental courses, and currently serves as a Virtual Teaching Artist with Palm Beach Opera as part of their Story Time Series for Palm Beach County schools and libraries, leading opera story times in English and bilingual programming.

Shannon had a diverse arts education, growing up in a family of musicians and a thriving arts community in central Florida. Her experience included attending the elite FMEA All-State Reading Choir for her sight-reading skills, playing the trumpet for 10 years and serving as Drum Major in her marching band, and winning 1st Place awards in Florida State Thespian Festivals.

Like many musicians, Shannon is empathetic to neurodiversity. She is grateful that her parents always encouraged her artistic pursuits, as she developed tools for success in life through her activities in school chorus, band, and drama. Shannon takes pride and joy in encouraging students to embrace their unique qualities, and to turn what others see as "struggles" into super-powers that support them beyond their artistic studies.

Shannon was reunited with her trumpet in 2021, and plays for fun and for freedom... key tenets of music-making!
